Somatic Experiencing
A Body-Centered Approach To Treatment Of Stress & Trauma

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing is a naturalistic treatment approach for the effects of stress and trauma. It was developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine who found ways to harness the natural, inbuilt capabilities of the nervous system to allow the charge of the traumatic experience to be ‘discharged’ from the body, allowing nervous system regulation to happen, equilibrium to be restored and for people to be able to not only live their lives but grow, develop and flourish.

Further information about Somatic Experiencing can be found here and here

Why might someone have Somatic Experiencing therapy?

  • People experiencing high levels of stress and therefore high levels of hyperarousal of the nervous system meaning that they feel stressed and anxious
  • People who have been involved in traumatic incidents such as a car crash, even a ‘fender bender’
  • People who have been in a natural disaster such as a flood or fire
  • People who have fallen, even if the fall was not a ‘bad’ fall
  • People who have had surgery
  • People who have phobias of any kind
  • People who have experienced a violent attack, including sexual violence

I completed my Somatic Experiencing training with SOS Internationale. I’m able to work with clients on the above topics but the list is not exhaustive so please do ask if there is something you would like to work with that is not in the examples.
